Ceramicist
In 1979-80 Janie Ramsay received a Turkish Government scholarship to study Turkish Ceramics. Based in Istanbul she also travelled to various regions of the country developing her interest in the fascinating art and culture of this extraordinary country.
Now living in Devon, on Dartmoor, Janie Ramsay works predominantly in stoneware clay, making sculptural pieces and hand built ceramic vessels. Janie Ramsay’s inspiration and interest centres around the dramatic moorland and coastal landscapes of Devon and Cornwall. My time spent in Turkey, with its extraordinary range of antique, contemporary ceramics and at the museum in Dover have had an underlying influence on all my creative endeavours in clay.
Janie states:
“Working with a variety of hand building techniques, I decorate my pieces using resist methods with slips and oxides, rarely glazing it. I then polish my finished ceramic work with beeswax polish. I fire my pieces many times to achieve the surface texture I require, taking the work up to a temperature of approximately 1180 – 1200 degrees in my ceramic kiln in the final firing.”
