Sam Boughton
Sam Boughton lives and works from her studio in Teignmouth, South Devon.
She received a BA in Illustration from UWE and an MA in Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art. Sam Boughton then worked as a book illustrator for Tate Gallery, Penguin and OUP before becoming a full-time painter.
Her semi-abstract landscapes are a visual response to her natural surroundings. Sam Boughton uses dynamic compositions to create a sense of space, echoing that of the wide open spaces found here in Devon and Cornwall through the use of pouring, dripping and splashing.
As a plein air painter Sam Boughton’s process always begins outdoors. Sam initially work in sketchbooks, repeatedly visiting a location until she becomes familiar with that unique area. Sam states that once she has enough information she returns with large scale paper and works spontaneously in inks and pastel to capture the movement and energy of that day. Sam Boughton’s marks are inspired by wind, shapes of flora and fauna and the general geographic layout of the landscape.
Sam then returns back to the studio, where she continues to work on her paintings adding finer details in pastel to add contrast and depth to the final piece.
