Jema Skinner
Jema has been needle felting for 5+ years and takes inspiration from the natural world and in her home county of Devon. Jema’s needle felt art is made from natural materials most of which are locally sourced from the sheep in her village.
Drawing inspiration primarily from the natural world around her, Jema’s needle felting work is characterised by an impressive attention to detail and a deep appreciation for local resources. Most of the materials she uses are sourced from the sheep that graze in her village near Totnes, emphasizing her commitment to sustainability and community. This connection to her environment not only shapes her artistic practice but also honors the very ecosystems she hopes to study further.
Jema has a unique talent for creating lifelike representations of animals, each piece resonating with personality and charm. Her needle-felted creations serve as delightful centerpieces, adding whimsy and character to any home. They often spark conversation and admiration among those who encounter them, showcasing her ability to blend artistic skill with a passion for storytelling through her work.
Her journey as an artist began with a noble cause—initially, Jema made and sold her needle felted foxes, hares, owls and other wild animals to raise funds for a conservation expedition to Madagascar. There, she had the incredible opportunity to measure biodiversity within the coral reefs, an experience that deeply enriched her understanding of marine ecosystems.
With a strong desire to further her education, Jema aspires to study marine biology at the university level. She is eager to dedicate her career to the conservation of marine life and hopes to become a marine biologist, using her art as a platform to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire others to cherish the planet’s natural beauty. Through her art and future studies, Jema plans to make a meaningful impact, blending creativity with her passion for the natural world.
