Janine Partington

Janine Partington, a Bristol-based artist, fuses traditional vitreous enamelling on copper with contemporary designs to create framed wall panels. Her work draws inspiration from nature, featuring stylized images of seedheads, trees, landscapes and birds.
Enamelling, the process of fusing glass onto metal, results in a durable and tactile finish. Janine uses hand-cut stencils and sifting techniques to achieve her clean aesthetic. She begins by sketching designs on card, which she then transforms into her own original stencils.

After placing the stencil on a copper panel, she sifts powdered vitreous enamel over it. The panel is then placed in a kiln at around 800°C. This firing process is repeated until the design is complete. Exposed copper areas are coated with clear enamel, known as flux, which seals the colours. Once finished, the designs are vibrant and long-lasting.
